when using the “persistence of vision” technique, i would like to create small “christmas tree balls” that serve as displays when rapidly moving the eyes. this way, several messages can be placed in christmas trees around the city.

Finally i had another idea on how to add a visual message into a decorated christmas tree or other public christmas decoration:
this one is just for the cameras.
since CCD chips of digital cameras are sensitive to IR light, i could place patterns of IR LEDs into a christmas tree, which would the be visible only on digital images taken by tourists. The only problem could be that the IR light is too weak and would vanish behind the true decoration.
heres a picture i took today with my digital camera.

since this could be difficult (maybe more light would help) this could be a hack just for the security personnel of public buildings, a christmas decoration visible only for IR cameras…
and then i had another idea: since tourists often do nightshots with their flash switched on, even when they are taking pictures of objects far away, a pattern of balls prepared with a reflective paint would be strongly visible only on their night photos, just like traffic signs.

i am still
loving the idea of falling leaves pre-printed with information about some social problem… since crime in berlin is a problem but not that severe…
more interesting is the death penalty…
according to amnesty international, in 2005 2,148 people were executed in 22 countries…
the countries are:
another object that could be set up in front of the american embassy, old or new…
a banner with lots of leds in various layers are arranged in a way that they form a display matrix when viewed at fron one special point.
this could be used like a demonstration banner… maybe the content could even be dynamic…

even better, the lights could be fixed on the tree itself, but the setup would be really really painstaking…
the “persistance of vision” effect can be used to integrate subtle messages into existing or specially set up christmas trees: pulsed LEDs, arranged i a special pattern seem to be glowing as bright as normal LEDs, but upon movement of the eyes, they can be used as a display. for example a christmas tree could be set up in front of the american embassy with an integrated “display” showing a skull, serving as a hint towards the deadly business america is following in several countries.
