loopArena goes Helsinki

after the positive feedback at “reality check” during transmediale, i will present loopArena a second time to the public, this time at the protolab of the pixelache festival which will take place from 30 March – 2 April in Helsinki at Kiasma, Museum of Contemporary Art.

heres the setup:

a wooden frame with 82 IR LEDs powered by an old PC power supply

a projector, a borrowed panasonic DV cam with 0Lux function with an infrared-pass-filter, a pc running eyesweb and processing

and here we go. 2 seconds lag, ugly-as hell calibration, but it WORKS.

since yesterday, the prototype touchscreen is assembled and equipped with 84 LEDs (for the rest there was no space…)

now that all is set up we had to realise that the webcam a) has poor aperture, so that you either dont see anything and b) if you set the sensitivity up you have a monstrous latency combined with noise. we should have stayed small-scale.

where to get a decent camera till monday?

over the last few days i was a little bit worried, that the light energy of the LEDs would be insufficient to run the large screen…
but today i attached 13 LEDs to the testing piece of acrylic glass to only one side and was surprised by the brightness…

and even the scattered light at my fingertips was bright enough to be tracked…
