my first post in both categories: loopArena AND multitouch. Since a few weeks, i am working on a multitouch version of loopArena together with Ulrich v. Zadow of the MTC team. hopefully we will accomplish to get a basic Version working to present it during Musikmesse Frankfurt at the end of March…

multitouch gone mass-production

Last week i was visiting the IFA fair on its last day. All in all it must have been heaven for electronics sales people, since every big player on the market was showing off his newest gadgets. Yet for the consumer, unless he or she is a total computer/mobiledevice/hifi-nerd, it was quite boring. After the second Soccerfield-sized hall filled either with HDTV Sets or Mobile Phones that serve you a cold drink after reading your thoughts, i just wanted to go home.

But then i entered the PHILIPS stand and was surprised by their concepts which were the only futuristic and innovative things i saw that day.

not only were they showing their new technology photonic textiles in form of t-shirts with embedded color displays and a couch that showed the time,

but also a soon to be mass-produced prototype of a MULTITOUCH SCREEN. At the moment they are planning to use it for computer-aided boardgames in pubs and other places of communication; they see the strength in making computer games more collaborative, but i am sure that their “lifestyle incubator” lab will soon discover the endless possibilities of such an object.

at the stand, they were willing to talk a little about the technology: the screen is a LCD screen, as such high resolution, flat and bright. the touch sensing system recognizes objects as small as a childs fingertip, but they are working on an even higher resolution. up to 45 Objects can be tracked at a time, which in my opinion is sufficient for most of the interaction techniques i can imagine, including combined tile/finger types.

the tracking is done by a secret combination of IR LEDs and Photodiodes (sounds like “array of light barriers” to me) and daylight-suitable.

Philips seems to be a good place to work at.

filtering like a pro

today i went to calumet here in berlin to buy an IR pass filter. the one i had which was taped together from black photo negative was too transparent for visible light (you could still see a red glare when looking directly at a light source) as well as it blurred the image because of the multiple layers of negative and clear adhesive tape.

the filter i bought is a polyester filter called LEE 10087, which means it is manufactured by LEE Filters, measures 100×100mm and is filter color #87. guess what, it works well. less light than before reaches the CCD chip while the image quality is enhanced.

i used the universities’ laser cutter to cut a ring out of plastic which fits over the lens and i fixed a piece of filter to it using double-sided adhesive tape. looks really professional now.

yesterday christian and me did a test run of the multitouch ftir screen with the new security camera and the vvvv patch, which went very well… watch the video i shot with my mobile (bad quality)

the second security camera arrived some days ago.

zoom lens, 0.02 lux sensitivity, 420 TVL resolution… if this isn’t it, then what is?

i guess since i ordered so much surveillance related stuff on ebay lately, i am now on some kind of blacklist. good thing i am not planning on going to the united states.
