auditive output

Monday, July 3rd, 2006

although i like the idea of music as content, there were some more ideas:

the suffering of christ is a symbol of hope and is traduced as a means to keep us going. so, why not play people’s opinions about why life is good?

the german magazine jetzt (which exists only as an online magazine for a while) has a “lebenswert” (== worth living for) podcast, where people talk about what they love about their life. why not listen to living people instead of long time dead?

people talk about their feelings in their blogs. they feel misjudged, exploited, they are made fun of, they watch their loved ones suffer and die – and they write about it.

i am using the built-in reading function of adobe reader to generate audio output from this. here’s a blog entry found on technorati while searching for “verleumdet”. listen

the same principle works on google news, too. i like the unintentional collage-technique applied by the excerpts chosen around the keywords. the reading has a hypnotic quality which is brilliant for meditation… honestly, after listening to it for hours… listen and listen

it is like carrying a cross…

i now have it all together: a speaker, an amplifier, an arduino board, easyradio modules, a yampp III industrial mp3 player with a serial interface, but… it doesnt work.

somehow the player doesnt get the messages from the arduino, and the easyradio modules simply scramble the data.

at least the amplifier amplifies my minidisc players’ signal…

if anyone out there with experience in serial communication using an arduino board is reading this, please contact me…

got rights?

after having written the 14 composers on wednesday, i have the impression they all like my project and are willing to support it by giving their permission. so far, i have it from:

  • Lior Navok (Station 1)
  • David Revill (Station 2)
  • Stephan David Hummel (Station 3)
  • Rhona Clarke (Station 5)
  • Norbert Hoffmann (Station 6)
  • Thoma Simaku (Station 7)
  • Tomislav Saban (Station 10)
  • Andjelko Igrec (Station 12)
  • Günther Zechberger (Station 14)

got content?

Monday, June 19th, 2006

While thinking about the content, i came up with various ideas, mostly based on read literature:

  • poems
  • short stories
  • biblical citations

mostly easy to find and apply, but a more exciting and abstract solution would be good.

so i did some more research and found out that there are several musical compositions on the topic, by franz liszt and johann sebastian bach for example, but i also found a project by austrian composer günther zechberger, who, in 2005, invited 13 international composers to create pieces for each station, each no longer than 3 minutes. a very interesting project on its own, it would be a perfect match for my project. i contacted him, he already gave me permission to use his piece on station 14, and he will give me the contact information of the other 13 composers so i can try to get the stage right for each.

i hope this works out, i am very excited.
